How do you start your day?
I make the bed, yes, I always, always make the bed.
No, its not an ocd thing.
Its a practical and visual thing. Spending hours choosing bed linens, spending money on quilts and cushions and then leaving them in a heap - I don’t get it. I tiptoe downstairs and hush three cats while I make coffee as quickly as possible. Sweet feline’s easily charmed with cans of salmon, eating greedily, silently. A need that must be immediately fulfilled since the cacophony they will set off will wake children … in which case, the next hour will no longer be my own.
And why this quiet?
This stealthy subterfuge?
My computer screen beckons.
Like the sirens who called out to sailors with their songs of enchantment … it calls me with its promise.
Emails that have arrived, Facebook updates, The Twitter news, and posts to be written.
A connection with a world outside the sweet slumber of my home.
The peacefulness of an early morning, the quiet covenant of a new day.
This is the day the Lord has made …
And yet, I do not stop to give thanks, or spend moments in reflection.
My shoulders hunched, my attention elsewhere when my youngest says, ‘morning.’
More often than not, a cup of coffee at my screen while my girls are having breakfast in different places. One outside, enjoying the sky, the ducks swimming, a cat in her lap.
The other already at a screen … sadly, the apple has not fallen far from the tree …
And so a goal for a new day.
A new beginning, since with each new day we get to start afresh …
God is so good to us that way.
Yes, still make that bed … I just have too, but take that shower and dress for the day.
Make the coffee, (and feline needs to be met too)
Light a candle and turn on the soft music that brings calm to my soul.
And read, and pray … and stop to enjoy the glory of the gift of a new day.
Let this be what my children see when they awake.
A mom at peace, starting a day that shared a moment with our Lord and Savior.
A mom who greets them with a smile, is ready for a hug and wants to hear about their dreams.
A mom who looks into their eyes and gives them her full attention.
A mom who is not distracted.
A mom who is present.
Sounds like a very good start to a new day.
And as always
